BlackBerry to PlayBook using BBM™ PIN

If you go to the settings menu on your PlayBook you will discover that your device has its own pin.
  1. Swipe down from the top of your PlayBook.
  2. Select the 'About' menu option.
  3. In the drop-down list next to the sentence "View information about your tablet", select 'Hardware'.
  4. Your 'PIN' is available from this list.
It seems that a PIN is inherent with all BlackBerry hardware although its uses on the PlayBook are not obvious. However when bridged to a PlayBook, your BlackBerry makes applications available directly on your PlayBook. It is possible to send emails, text messages, view contacts, calendars, use BBM, make notes and create tasks on your tablet. These are not saved on your tablet but instead are updated on your BlackBerry device (this is the only way to access BBM on your PlayBook (WiFi only) as of writing this). This has been verified by users in the BlackBerry Support Forums. I am unable to comment on the 3G PlayBook as I haven't been able to acquire one yet.

It would be reasonable to suggest that the inclusion of a PIN is the remnant of a plan to extend the functionality of the PlayBook. However Thornsten Heins is clear in stating the RIM's current efforts are focussed solely on BlackBerry 10 and so this may be something that won't be addressed soon (if ever).

To sum up an answer to the question, "Can I send stuff to my PlayBook using its PIN?" the answer at this time is "No". You can however Bridge your BlackBerry phone to your PlayBook, which is useful if the 'stuff' you need is on your BlackBerry.

Until the next time...
