Operating Systems 101
For those who don't know, 'OS' is an abbreviation commonly used for operating system (the software that runs on a computer). What does software that runs on a computer have to do with BlackBerry® smartphones?Well, BlackBerry® smartphones are like mini-computers. Most are more powerful than the first computers ever made and require software in order for us to interact with them.
BlackBerry® Operating Systems
Some of the more popular operating systems that are currently being supported on BlackBerry® smartphones are:
- OS 5
- OS 6
- OS 7
OS 7.1.0.714 is the latest build version available currently for smartphones although BlackBerry® 10 will be released in just over a month.
BlackBerry® tablets operate on different software, the QNX platform, and OS 2.1.0.1314 is the latest version released (at least in the UK).
How to
From a BlackBerry® smartphone's home screen,
- Press simultaneously, 'Alt + Shift + H' (without the quote marks).
- Your OS version is labelled under "App Version".
From a BlackBerry® PlayBook™ tablet's home screen,
- Swipe down from the top with one finger.
- Select the 'About' menu option.
- Your OS version is noted under the label "OS Version".
So that is how you can work out (quickly) your BlackBerry® device's operating system.
